USA Today: This is How New Jersey Can End Homelessness
Contrary to popular beliefe, New Jersey is among the top 10 worst states for housing affordability. The state’s housing crisis directly contributes to the rising homelessness crisis.
Volunteers of America-Northern New Jersey has been tackling these growing crises for decades, but need the support of lawmakers to champion scalable solutions, writes Taysha Milagros Clark-Reid, Director of Public Policy at Volunteers of America-Northern New Jersey, in USA Today.
Clark-Reid outlines how Gov. Mikie Sherrill and the state Legislature can address New Jersey’s housing and homelessness crisises.
Solutions include:
- The Homeless Prevention Program Act, which reduces eviction filings and provides support to those at immenent risk of homelessness.
- Increasing shelter capacity with pathways to permanent housing.
- Increasing investments in the State Rental Assistance Program.
- Protecting and expanding the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, the state’s dedicated source of funding for developing affordable housing.
