Staff Spotlight: Lisa Stinson
Lisa Stinson, Program Director at Empower Residence—our women’s shelter on Manhattan’s Upper West Side—brings steady, hands-on leadership that supports both staff and residents every day.
Since joining VOA-GNY in 2017 as a case worker, Lisa has grown through different roles at Schwartz Men’s Shelter and Jamaica Women’s Employment Shelter, building deep experience along the way. After a brief time away, she returned with even more to bring—and was recently promoted from Residential Services Manager to Program Director. “I just love what I do,” she says.
At Empower, Lisa is known for being someone people can count on. Whether she’s helping staff navigate complex challenges or stepping in during high-pressure situations, she leads with clarity and care. “They know they can come to me because I have an open-door policy.”
What drives her is seeing residents take their next steps toward stability. “When they move out and do what they’ve got to do…that’s a joy.”
Lisa is also part of VOA-GNY’s Mentorship Program, where she’s continued to grow her confidence and strengthen her voice as a leader. She also recently earned her master’s degree from Monroe University, an accomplishment that reflects her commitment to always learning and pushing forward.
At the heart of Lisa’s work is a simple belief: treat people with respect, lead with honesty, and never stop growing. It’s something her team and residents feel every day.
Thank you, Lisa, for the leadership and dedication you bring to Empower.
