Staff Spotlight: Kenya Thomas
Kenya Thomas, Teaching Assistant at our Bronx Early Learning Center (BELC), has been a dedicated member of the team for over a decade. BELC is VOA-GNY’s 22-classroom preschool special education program serving children ages 2.9–5, many of whom are on the autism spectrum.
Kenya supports classrooms wherever she is needed, often stepping in as an Acting Teacher to ensure consistency and care for both students and staff. She brings patience and a strong focus on communication to her work, building trust with families and collaborating closely with colleagues.
She finds the greatest reward in helping children reach important milestones, such as transitioning from sippy cups to open cups or achieving full potty training. These moments bring pride to both families and staff. When challenges arise, particularly with behavioral needs, Kenya approaches them with persistence and creativity, working with specialists to find what helps each child succeed.
What has kept her at BELC for so many years is the strong sense of community. She describes it as “family-oriented,” where colleagues celebrate one another and create a supportive, welcoming environment.
A lifelong Bronx resident, Kenya values the opportunity to give back to her community. As she puts it, “all children have voices…you just have to take time to listen.”
Kenya’s work reflects the spirit of Autism Awareness Month by meeting each child where they are and helping them grow with confidence. Thank you Kenya for the passion and dedication you bring to the classroom each and every day.
