Volunteers of America-Greater New York offers wealth-building services, which empower clients to strengthen their career opportunities and build a financial safety net — a key component to preventing future homelessness.

One example is YouthBuild — a workforce development program for young people ages 17 to 24 who live in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Through this program, participants earn their GED and receive construction training, hands-on work experience, and employment placement support.

“I am very grateful that I started YouthBuild because I feel like it gave me a sense of purpose,” she said. “I feel like I didn’t have a plan or I didn’t know what to do next, but they helped me make those steps
and then take those steps.”

Naizarie earned her GED and completed three industry-recognized construction trainings, which covered safety protocols, tool handling, and workplace skills. In the process, she discovered her passion for carpentry and is now pursuing a carpentry union apprenticeship.
