A$AP Rocky Remembers The Kindess He Experienced at a VOA-GNY Shelter As a Kid

The rapper shares a fond memory of a volunteer who paid for his movie ticket when he was a kid experiencing homelessness.

Rapper A$AP Rocky made an appeareance at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to promote his latest album “Don’t Be Dumb” and mentioned a memory that stood out to him while living at a shelter run by Volunteers of America-Greater New York as a kid.

“I was in a shelter called Volunteers of America, VOA, and basically, they would let different volunteers come and do things with the kids or donate anything,” A$AP Rocky told Jimmy Fallon.

The artist went on to describe how a woman treated him and other kids experiencing homelessness to watch the latest Harry Potter movie. A$AP Rocky thought she was rich in order to pay for their movie tickets but it turns out she was a substitute teacher who could barely make ends meet. He asked her why she would share what little she had with them.

“‘Because, it feels great to do something like that,'” he recalled.

It’s a memory that has stuck with him ever since.

“I don’t even know the lady’s name but God bless you. Thank you so much,” he said. “It’s stuck in my head.”

A$AP Rocky was honored at VOA-GNY’s Annual Gala in 2022 with a Lifetime Acheivement Award.
