YouthBuild @ VOA-GNY is a workforce development initiative for youth ages 16 to 24 who live in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Through a combination of education, workforce training, work experience, employment, and leadership development, the program helps young adults jump-start a career in the construction industry.

For students without a high school diploma, VOA-GNY will provide an opportunity to complete GED programs through a partnership with the NYC Department of Education District 79. All participants will complete construction certification courses, after which they can engage in paid work opportunities and job shadowing through VOA-GNY’s real estate department to gain practical experience.

As a part of the employment training, participants will work closely with an economic empowerment specialist to develop and achieve individualized employment and financial goals. These specialists will advise youth on financial planning, budgeting, and securing a job following the completion of the program, and other areas related to financial literacy.

The program also aims to foster community engagement, with participants getting involved in community projects and advocacy events focusing on critical issues such as homelessness prevention, voter engagement, and gang/gun violence prevention.

YouthBuild @ VOA-GNY includes:

• Training and certification in OSHA 40, National Center for Construction, Education, and Research (NCCER), and Green Building Certificates.
• Hands-on internship at an active construction site
• Wraparound support such as:
  • Monthly stipends and Metrocards
  • Childcare and mental health services
• Leadership and professional development
• Job &/or post-secondary education placement support
• Computer and financial literacy training
• Follow up support from Employment Specialist and Case Manager
