Who Receives Our Backpacks?

Eighteen years ago, Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s community service campaign Operation Backpack® began with the goal of providing gently used backpacks and supplies to the 600 children living in our shelters. Today, Operation Backpack® is the largest back-to-school drive of its kind in New York City, ensuring that all children who live in a NYC shelter who need one, have the school supplies to do their work. Thanks to public support, we’ve been able to distribute beautiful, new backpacks—in a variety of styles, colors and designs—brimming with grade-specific school supplies to about 200,000 students to date!

The NYC Department of Education and NYC Department of Homeless Services continue to rely on Volunteers of America-Greater New York to ensure these children have the supplies they need for school. The children who are eligible are those living in a family shelter, domestic violence shelter, or a runaway or homeless youth shelter —some of the city’s children who are most critically in need.

We are proud to distribute to the following homeless and social services providers to help ensure that every child living in a NYC shelter goes back to school with a full complement of supplies.
