Who Receives Our Backpacks?

Sixteen years ago, Operation Backpack® began with the goal of providing gently used backpacks and supplies to the 600 children living in Volunteers of America-Greater New York's (VOA-GNY) shelters. Today, Operation Backpack® is New York City's largest back-to-school drive of its kind, ensuring that all children who live in a NYC shelter and need a backpack, receive one. Thanks to public support, we are able to distribute beautiful, new backpacks (in a huge variety of styles, colors and designs!) brimming with grade-specific supplies. To date, we've outfit about 180,000 students!

The Department of Education and the Department of Homeless Services continue to rely on Operation Backpack® to give these children fully stocked backpacks. The children who are eligible are those living in a family shelter, domestic violence shelter, or a runaway or homeless youth shelter — some of the city’s children most critically in need.

We are proud to distribute backpacks to the following homeless and social service providers to help ensure that every child living in a NYC shelter goes back to school with a full backpack of supplies — so they can start school on day one, looking and feeling more like their classmates and less like a child in need.
