Veteran Peer Support Programs
Battle Buddy Bridge
The Battle Buddy Bridge (B3) is a veteran peer-to-peer program developed by Volunteers of America that provides services and opportunities to military veterans and their families. B3 trains, certifies and employs veterans as peer support specialists who function as community resource navigators. Battle Buddies work in squads to help other veterans and their families get access to housing, health care, family support, training, employment, and legal services. By working as B3 Battle Buddies, Veterans get an opportunity to re-engage in cooperative, purpose-driven activities for which they receive professional training, employment and career development as well as various forums for multi-sector networking to aid in their own reintegration journeys.
Spiritual Resiliency Training
Integrated within the Battle Buddy Bridge program is the the Volunteers of America Spiritual Resiliency Training (SRT). It is designed to support recovery from moral injury in veterans via a peer-facilitated, multidimensional group process. SRT’s prevention-based approach to veteran well-being employs a peer leadership system, a military squad model of trust and bonding, and complementary alternative therapy strategies, such as mindfulness and the arts, to enhance recommended protocols and to reinforce integrative skills for emotional stability. The SRT strategies focus on confronting moral suffering, exploring forgiveness and gratitude, restoring meaning or faith and purpose to life, increasing self-acceptance and awareness of each person’s core humanity, and civic engagement through public service.
