The majority of our volunteer opportunities require a minimum commitment of three months or more. A program tour and orientation will be provided. All volunteers are subject to a background check at the discretion of the staff.

Description: Provide monthly grooming services for both men and women including: haircuts, and/or basic hair styling. Must be licensed. Volunteer must be 18 years old or older.

Kitchen Assistance

Cromwell Avenue Safe Haven (Bronx)
Volunteer Opportunity: Food Service Assistance
Description: Assist our staff serve meals and maintain a clean and neat dining area. Additional duties may include: mopping and helping the staff with maintaining the in-house pantry storage. Committed volunteers are needed during the work week for at least three hours during the following time periods: 5:30am-8:30am, 11:30am-2:30pm or 4:30pm-7:30pm. Prior food service experience is preferred but not necessary. Volunteers must be 18 and older.

Volunteer Opportunity: Kitchen Assistance
Description: Assist kitchen operations with serving meals, kitchen sanitation, receiving and storing food supplies. Commitment to four hour shifts available early or late in the day. Prior food service experience is encouraged. No special degrees required but all volunteers must be 18 years old and older.

Computer Literacy Assistance

Commonwealth Veterans Residence (Bronx)
Volunteer Opportunity: Computer Literacy Assistance
Description: Help supervise the computer lab three times a week for three to four hours a day between the hours of 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Prior experience with Microsoft Suite, web browsing and helping with résumé writing is preferred, but not necessary. All volunteers must be 18 years old or older.

Volunteer Opportunity: Library Assistance
Description: Maintain our onsite library two to three times a week for three hours a day. Tasks may include: monitoring when books are being checked in/out, ensuring books are placed neatly on shelves and returned to their appropriate areas based on category. Description: Educate our clients in area of budgeting by providing a workshop or series or workshops that teaches skills in financial literacy and provides the tools needed to make effective financial decisions. Volunteer Opportunity: GED Tutor
Description: Facilitate pre-GED classes three days a week for two hours a day. Assist residents in going through the Pre-GED prep book. Six month commitment. Volunteer must have a Bachelor’s degree and should be knowledgeable about the exam and with the preparation process.

Volunteer Opportunity: Tutor (Elementary-High School)
Description: Help children understand the fundamental concepts of math, science, reading, etc. in accordance with their course of study. After each session, volunteers are encouraged to debrief with staff with any questions or concerns. Must be 16 years old or older with a sufficient knowledge of elementary, middle school and high school subject matter. Commitment of one to three hours a week for four months between 3pm-6pm.

Recreation Assistance for Adults

Volunteer Opportunity: Recreation Assistance
Description: Collaborate with the staff to organize and facilitate recreational activities for adults such as games and arts and crafts. Volunteer during standard business hours (M-F, 9am-5pm) or other agreed upon time frame. Prior experience is preferred but not necessary. There is no degree requirement but all volunteers must be 18 and older.

Volunteer Opportunity: Art and Crafts Instructor for Children
Description: Organize and lead activities based on monthly themes and holidays for ten to twenty school aged children or five to ten toddlers. Activities can include, but are not limited to: arts & crafts and games.
Experience working with children is required. Basic materials will be provided, but donated materials are encouraged and welcomed.

Volunteer Opportunity: Childcare/Recreation Assistance
Description: Assist staff with implementing daily lessons plans, daily activities, and with class management. Additional duties may also include cleaning, organizing and decorating the classroom. Description: Host events to recognize Recovery Month in September. Projects may include breakfast at the beginning of month, a sharing circle about recovery, recovery-based movies on Thursdays, and a lunch at the end of the month. Other creative ideas for group activities are welcome. Past activities have included a mini carnival and a backyard activity.
