The majority of our volunteer opportunities require a minimum commitment of three months or more. A program tour and orientation will be provided. All volunteers are subject to a background check at the discretion of the staff.

Volunteer Opportunity: Decorating for Special Events 
Description: Collaborate with our staff to decorate our building for the upcoming holiday or change of season. Assist us with maintaining our bulletin boards and creating flyers promoting recreational activities and events. Perfect for an individual or small group of up to four volunteers. Basic materials will be provided, but donated materials are welcomed.

Volunteer Opportunity: Kitchen Assistant
Description: Assist our kitchen staff with meal preparation. Working knowledge of food preparation and kitchen safety is required. The volunteer will work under direct supervision of the kitchen staff, helping to prepare, cook, and clean up. Long term commitments of three months or longer is preferred, though shorter time frames will be considered. Volunteers must be at least eighteen years old and hold a minimum of High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Must be certified in to work in a kitchen, provide a resume and references. Must be able to pass a background check if required.

Volunteer Opportunity: Moving Help
Description: While our building under goes construction, assist us with helping our clients organize, pack, and move to a temporary room within the facility. Commitment is flexible but volunteer must be available during standard business hours (M-F, 9am-5pm). Must be 18 years or older. May require lifting boxes up to 30lb.

Commonwealth Veterans Residence (Bronx)
Volunteer Opportunity: Library Assistance
Description: Maintain our on-site library two to three times a week. Tasks may include: monitoring when books are being checked in/out, ensuring books are placed neatly on shelves, and are returned to their appropriate areas based on category. Volunteer must be at least 18 years old.

Cromwell Avenue Safe Haven (Bronx)
Volunteer Opportunity: Food Service Assistance
Description: Assist our staff serve meals and maintain a clean and neat dining area. Additional duties may include: mopping and helping the staff with maintaining the in-house pantry storage. Committed volunteers are needed during the work week for at least three hours during the following time periods: 5:30am-8:30am, 11:30am-2:30pm or 4:30pm-7:30pm. Prior food service experience is preferred but not necessary. Volunteers must be 18 and older.

Creston Avenue Residence (Bronx)
Volunteer Opportunity: Gardening Volunteer
Description: Assist the Recreation Specialist with engaging the residents in gardening projects and activities. Plant flowers in the backyard and encourage participation from tenants who reside in the building. Volunteer must be available lift up to 20 lbs., stand and bend for up to 3 hours. The volunteer must be available Monday through Friday from 2pm-6pm. Please take precautions to be aware of any allergic reactions to pollen or insects, as well as sun exposure, this is an outdoor activity.

Description: Liberty House is seeking a volunteer passionate about creativity and free expression to help the on-site Art Therapist with group activities. Volunteer must be respectful of individuals’ expression and excited about promoting healing through the arts. Long term commitments of three months or longer is preferred, though shorter time frames will be considered. Volunteers must be at least eighteen years old and hold a Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or be enrolled in college. Must be able to provide resume and references. Volunteer Opportunity: GED Tutor
Description: Provide tutoring in subjects and skills required to pass the GED exam. 
Classes would be held once monthly for two-three hours, and open to clients who have not received a High School diploma or GED. Long term commitments of three months or longer is preferred, though shorter time frames will be considered. Volunteer Opportunity: Indoor Gardening Instructor/Horticultural Therapist
Description: Teach our clients about different types of plants and how to care for them. Volunteer should possess a basic working knowledge of different plant types, with a focus on smaller sized plants and plants that require little maintenance (ex: cactus plants). Long term commitments of three months or longer is preferred, though shorter time frames will be considered. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and hold at minimum High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Must be able to provide resume, references, and pass a background check if required.

Description: Demonstrate some ways prepare and cook cooking nutritious and inexpensive meals with the use of a microwave and/ or a food processor or blender. Description: Reduce stress and promote tranquility by leading a soothing and inspirational yoga workshop. Must be a certified yoga instructor (trauma informed is a plus) who can provide an informative class highlighting the benefits of yoga. Volunteer Opportunity: Family Movie Night
Description: Encourage family bonding by hosting a family-friendly "movie night".  Volunteers will be responsible for setting up the viewing room, providing snacks, and will select and provide a copy of the film, which should be appropriate for all ages. There are no degree requirements but volunteer must be 21 years or older or accompanied by a legal guardian. The event may be held in either an evening or an afternoon.
