COVID-19 Crisis: Ways to Help

This page was updated on May 28, 2020. Please keep checking back for the latest ways you can help.

Volunteers of America-Greater New York helps tens of thousands of individuals and families in need – including formerly homeless veterans, families escaping domestic violence, vulnerable older adults and at-risk youth through 80 social service programs that support and empower them to live safe, healthy and productive lives in the community.

Your support is URGENTLY needed to help cover the extraordinary expenses we are incurring as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, as we continue to provide round-the-clock care for seniors, veterans, children, families and more. We anticipate these costs may exceed $6 million. Here's what your gift could provide:

Below is a list of other ways you can help. We will continue to add new needs as they arise.

Help Older Adults Safely Access Essentials

For older adults living at our supportive housing residences, a trip to the supermarket can put their health at risk. Many are also feeling the loss of the meals and socialization provided by community centers, which are now closed. Help these individuals safely access essentials like food and hygiene products by making a donation to VOA-Greater New York. With these funds, we can purchase the every-day items residents need.

    Support Operation Backpack®

Operation Backpack® is critical to New York City’s homeless students. This year, in light of COVID-19 – with collection drives an impossibility due to employees working from home and social distancing measures in place – we've had to pivot to an entirely new delivery model. Instead we must raise $500,000 if we are to ensure every child in a NYC shelter has a backpack full of supplies in time for their first day of school. Your support is urgently needed now.

Keep Residents Engaged While Social Distancing

Adhering to guidelines, many of our supportive housing residents are spending hours alone in their room each day. Help them stay engaged and pass the time with books, games and puzzles. Donate to VOA-Greater New York and we will purchase and distribute activities for residents.
