Duane Reade Charitable Foundation

No New Yorkers can pass by their local Duane Reade store during the summer months without seeing an Operation Backpack® poster in the window. These posters invited the public to support Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s annual campaign to collect and distribute new backpacks full of school supplies to children living in homeless and domestic violence shelters throughout the City.

Since beginning their support of Operation Backpack, the Duane Reade Charitable Foundation has continually deepened its commitment to the cause. From posters in the windows to collection bins in more than 300 stores to facilitate donations from the public, from dedicated staff who volunteer their time during Sort Week to a skilled marketing team that promotes the partnership through a multitude of media, Duane Reade has been a vital partner in raising awareness of the needs of homeless children.

In December 2013, the Foundation decided to add another component to the 2014 drive — a donation option for customers at checkout, which will raise additional funds and give us the flexibility to purchase exactly the supplies we need.

The Foundation’s support has been essential in allowing Volunteers of America-Greater New York to distribute more than 44,000 filled backpacks over the past four years. These backpacks prepared the children to learn, alleviated their struggling parents of a financial burden, and showed an entire city the genuine philanthropic character of one of its most familiar retailers.

The Duane Reade Charitable Foundation was honored at Volunteers of America-Greater New York's 2013 Gala for leading the way in community involvement.
