Operation Backpack® is Growing Once Again

Since its inception 15 years ago, Operation Backpack® has provided 160,000 children living in homeless and domestic violence shelters in New York City with new backpacks full of school supplies. Initially, the campaign only collected backpacks for the children in Volunteers of America's shelters, but has expanded to include backpacks for all children residing in New York City shelters who need them. This year, we're growing once again to support more students in need.

The NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty. They currently fund services for runaway and homeless youth that include crisis and transitional shelters. The youth in these shelters face a number of personal challenges including teen pregnancy, sexual exploitation and abuse, or abandonment as a result of their sexual orientation and expression. The services provided are designed to protect these youth and help them gain access to resources they need to find stability during an already tumultuous time in their lives.

Help us meet our goal to provide backpacks for these youth this year by supporting the campaign! Hold a drive to collect new backpacks and supplies or fundraise for us at DonateOperationBackpackNYC.org.

Thank you!
