May Volunteer Opportunities

Mother's Day

At Volunteers of America-Greater New York, we house women who are mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and caregivers who play an important role in the lives of the children around them. Help celebrate these women by hosting a "Paint and Sip" event with sparkling cider at one of our family or domestic violence shelters, or host a "Spa Day" with sheet masks, manicures and activities to pamper them for a day. Another great option for May is to organize a Safe and Sound drive to collect baby items for families who sometimes arrive at our domestic violence shelters with little more than the clothes on their back. By helping us keep these items in stock, you help give these mothers some peace of mind as they begin the difficult process of rebuilding their lives.

Graduation Day

Members of the Class of 2019 are due to graduate from the Bronx Early Learning Center (BELC) this June! The BELC is Volunteers of America-Greater New York's Pre-K in the South Bronx where children with developmental delays learn alongside their typically developing peers. Every year, we celebrate the progress of our students with a graduation ceremony. You and your group can join in on the celebration by hosting a special carnival to acknowledge the students' achievements and help them get excited for kindergarten. Carnivals in the past have featured games, crafts, face-painting, and bubble machines, which the kids love!

Sponsor a Field Trip

As the school year winds down and summer starts up, consider hosting a field trip for the children and teens living in one of our family shelters. Our kids often see little beyond their own neighborhood, so these field trips are a real treat. These experiences help expand their world view and truly make a lasting impression on them. Field trips in the past have included visits to museums or to the movies. The memories that you can make through an experience like this are absolutely priceless!

If you're interested in any of these opportunities, please reach out to Andrew Zibell either by email or phone at (212) 496-4307. Or, if you have ideas of your own, we'd love to hear them and help you plan something special.
