Project STEP - Students Transition through Education and Preparation
Charter Oak's Project STEP helps students and their families successfully transition from the classroom to the adult world by providing vocational, social and other life-skills training and support. Making friends, finding a job, living independently, these are all goals most young people aspire to.
Project STEP fosters this process by:
- Teaching life-skills such as budgeting and basic home maintenance and teaching the importance of time management and safety.
- Helping students identify their interests, skills and goals and if applicable, helping them access continuing education including college or technical training.
- Focusing on developing appropriate social skills, teaching the art of cooperation, sharing, and politeness.
Building confidence and self-esteem, preparing these young people to advocate for themselves; the Client Advocacy Group is run by and for our clients who have the opportunity to take leadership roles.
- Providing pre-vocational assessments, job-readiness support (including resume building, interviewing, job-hunting skills and teaching the importance of good
attendance, following directions and time management), and supported employment.
Charter Oak Community Support Services partners with many local high schools including Stratford, Fairfield and Westport and local companies and other community groups including the Bridgeport YMCA, KMart, Border Books, TJMaxx, Marshalls, and more.
