Acquired Brain Injury Program
Every 23 seconds someone in the United States sustains a traumatic brain injury. Though not always visible, a brain injury is complex, often having physical, social, cognitive and vocational ramifications. Under the Acquired Brain Injury Medicaid Waiver, Volunteers of America's Charter Oak Community Support Services provides the following comprehensive services to this population:
Independent Living Skills Training
Independent Living Skills Training re-teaches self-care, task completion, communication, interpersonal and socialization skills. Practical, life-skills training includes reinforcing the importance of keeping medical appointments, maintaining a home, learning how to access community transportation, problem-solving skills and money management.
Pre-Vocational Training
Pre-Vocational Training prepares an individual for success in the work place, teaching the importance of good attendance, task completion, problem-solving and workplace safety skills.
Supported Employment
Supported Employment helps our clients who are unlikely to secure work at or above the minimum wage, find, train for, and retain a job.
Companion Services
Companion Services staff assist with meal preparation, grocery shopping, laundry and other household tasks as well as provide transportation to, and participate in, doctor’s appointments. Recreational outings are another important component of this service.
Homemaking Services
Homemaking Services can make it possible for an individual to remain in their own home, in the community, as opposed to institutionalized, by providing basic household help.
Connecticut's ABI Medicaid Waiver Program provides non-medical, in-home and community based services to those living with brain injuries, allowing these individuals to remain in the community as opposed to a nursing home or other institution. For more information on eligibility, criteria and application instructions related to the ABI Medicaid Waiver plan please contact your local Department of Social Service office.
