Birthday parties are a normal, happy part of childhood, and the gift of a birthday party can provide hope in the unsettled lives of children who are homeless. Volunteers of America-Greater New York launched Brightening Birthdays to bring birthday parties into our family and domestic violence shelters. Each month, all of the children in a shelter with birthdays that month are treated to a celebration complete with presents, goody bags, pizza and cake. Corporate partners help out by underwriting costs and providing volunteers, who join in the fun with crafts, face-painting, and party games.
Wonderful team-building experiences, the parties are memorable and rewarding, and companies participating thus far include Merkley+Partners, HSBC and Hilton Grand Vacations. If your organization would like to help brighten these children’s birthdays by underwriting the cost of a party and fielding volunteers, please call Colleen at (212) 496-4307.
Since the inaugural birthday party at Regent Family Residence, hundreds of children and their families have enjoyed parties where volunteers helped them celebrate with crafts, face-painting, presents, pizza, and beautiful desserts donated by Gristedes and Magnolia Bakery. Members of the local community can help make these family celebrations a success by volunteering, donating supplies or making a financial contribution.
