Operation Backpack 2011
Operation Backpack 2011 has concluded, and this year's drive was the most successful ever, breaking the 8,000 mark! That's right, thanks to the efforts of volunteers and donors throughout the entire community, more than 8,000 brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies will be in the hands of children in shelters for the start of school. Volunteers of America-Greater New York was especially proud to have Commissioner Seth Diamond of the NYC Department of Homeless Services as our special guest at Operation Backpack Media Day. Bowl to Give Back 2011
Presented by The Camps Group, Bowl to Give Back 2011 was a smashing success, raising more than $90,000 for our vital social service programs, and kicking off Operation Backpack in style. Teams from generous corporate sponsors, along with individual donors and friends of VOA, gathered on June 13, at the brand-new Bowlmor Lanes Times Square. The team from first-time lane sponsor Coach took home the first-place trophy. Everyone competed for more than 50 fabulous prizes, including a stay at the Trump International Hotel, house seats for Broadway 's Spider-man Turn Off the Dark, and choice Yankees tickets.  Birthday Wishes
Volunteers of America has teamed up with Hasbro Children's Fund and Birthday Wishes to give children in our family shelters essential childhood moments they might otherwise be denied: celebrations of their birthdays. We believe the gift of a birthday party can provide normalcy and hope in the unsettled lives of children who are homeless. Corporate and individual volunteers have helped by underwriting the cost of party supplies and food, and by joining in at the celebrations. Photos from recent Birthday Wishes parties
