Volunteers of America-Greater New York wants to give children in our family shelters essential childhood moments they might otherwise be denied: celebrations of their birthdays. We believe the gift of a birthday party can provide normalcy and hope in the otherwise unsettled lives of children who are homeless.
At monthly, on-site parties for children whose birthdays fall in that month companies, individuals, and community groups can join the fun in a number of vital ways:
· Donate and prepare goody bags.
· Underwrite the cost of supplies like balloons and paper goods.
· Be the on-site party coordinator; and more.
Since the inaugural birthday party at Regent Family Residence, dozens of children and their families have enjoyed parties where volunteers helped them celebrate with crafts, face-painting, presents, pizza, and beautiful cakes donated by Settepani Bakery and Gristedes. Children at the February party were delighted by the illusions and puppetry of magician Brian McGovern and his Hijinx Magic Show.
