Volunteers of America is one of the largest and most effective human service organizations in the nation, serving more than two million people each year through offices in nearly 400 communities nationwide. Volunteers of America-Greater New York, the largest of the local offices serves more than 40,000 men, women and children each year through more than 80 programs located in all five boroughs of New York City, along the Hudson Valley, in Northern New Jersey and Connecticut.
Volunteers of America – Greater New York is recognized for its award-winning schools for young children with special needs; innovative permanency planning for children orphaned by parents who have died of AIDS; group homes for youth in foster care; community residences and vocational programs for adults with developmental disabilities; supportive housing for formerly homeless adults and adults living with mental illness or recovering from addiction; halfway houses for men returning to their communities from prison; and supportive, community-based services for older adults.
The Greater New York affiliate has a long history of caring for the most vulnerable in our communities, including the homeless. In and around New York City, Volunteers of America-Greater New York shelters nearly 300 families and 1,500 individuals every night.
Volunteers of America –Greater New York delivers high-quality, cost-effective programs, responsibly managing a $90 million operating budget of which 91% goes directly to client services. Because we have a significant history and track record, we know what interventions work and which do not. We use proven therapeutic models throughout our programs, and develop a comprehensive case managementt plan for every one of our clients, based on their needs and their goals. We expect our clients to be active participants in their own recovery and, with skill and compassion, support them in their efforts.
